The article that I chose to write about is, “As Sea Levels Rise, Scientists Offer a Bold Idea: Dam the North Sea” was written on February 14th, 2020 by Claire Moses. The gist of this article is that because of global warming sea levels are rising which increases the risk of mass flooding in major metropolitan areas. So, to protect these areas scientists created a solution to dam the North Sea to protect many cities in Europe. Now, scientists have conjured up this idea because areas below high tide are already at risk. The dam would be two giant dams technically. It would connect Norway to Scotland and France to England. This would enclose the North Sea and the Baltic Sea from the North Atlantic Ocean and Norigian Sea. The effects that this would have on the enclosed area is that it would turn into a fresh water sea instead of a salt water sea. Not only would this impact the wildlife that lives there but it would create an economic crisis because the income from fishing would be truant. This is clearly not the best solution for rising sea levels but proposing a better idea to work on global warming would be more ideal. So, politicians and scientists are working together to propose better solutions. However, this is a last resort plan. I chose to write about this idea because the economic and climate effects this project would create if followed through. The money that would be spent on this project would hurt the European economy and the effects would be long lasting. Also, the effects of damming off the North Sea would be huge. The North Sea would turn into a giant lake by turning it into freshwater and we would be changing the ecosystems that live in that area. I am completely against this idea as I believe it would make matters worse.
